I finish my PhD in Sao Paulo University in Brazil in 2002. My thesis work consisted in identifying genes regulated in glioma cells treated with retinoic acid, using subtractive hybridization to generate differential expressed enriched libraries. I also worked during this period in the Brazilian genome project, where we sequenced generate ESTs derived from human tumors to help to annotate the human genome.
After that, I worked for 3 years in the Genomics Institute of Novartis Foundation in San Diego, CA. During this work, we annotated all the ubiquitin ligases genes in the human genome, and generate cDNA and siRNA libraries for high-throuput screenings.
After that, I started a postdoc in The Scripps Research Institute working with a new ubiquitin ligases whose mutation leads to a neurodegenerative phenotype in mouse. We published a recent paper showing that the orthologue of this ubiquitin ligase works in yeast, in a new quality control mechanism.
