Enrique Medina-Acosta serves as Senior Associate Professor of Biotechnology, Molecular Biology and Genetics at the Universidade Estadual do Norte Fluminense Darcy Ribeiro (UENF), RJ, Brazil, Head of the Molecular Identification and Diagnosis Unit at the UENF, jointly at Hospital Escola Álvaro Alvim, and Research Scientist of the National Research Council (CNPq) of Brazil. He received his Master and PhD degrees in Molecular and Medical Parasitology from the New York University (NYU), NY, USA, and completed post-docs in Molecular Biology at The Rockefeller University, NY, USA, and NYU. Dr. Medina-Acosta specializes in the development of molecular diagnostics in genetic human diseases and microbial diseases, using comprehensive approaches for predicting, mining and validating polymorphic DNA loci through comparative population genomics and wet-bench experimental validation through DNA typing techniques. He developed several DNA/cDNA typing assays for human identification, tracking of mutant carriers by linkage analysis, and monoallelic expression of genes. He serves on various grant review committees including CNPq and FAPERJ (Brazilian State agencies). He is Editor-in-Chief of Journal of Molecular Biology Research – JMBR, Lead Guest Editor (Special Issue) for the Biomedical Research International (formerly Journal of Biomedicine and Biotechnology), and Guest Associate Editor for BMC Genomics (Special Issue X-Meeting 2013). He is also a member of the International Editorial Board of Frontiers in Genetics (Bioinformatics and Computational Biology) and International Journal of Case Reports in Medicine. He has mentored several undergraduates and graduates.
